“It is really you, zaychik?”

Twenty minutes later, I’m grinning into the phone as Grigori answers his.

“It’s me.”

“Mara, I… I should have—”

“Grigori?” I smile wryly. “Let’s skip the part where you’re mad at yourself for not being there.”

“But I should have been,” he snarls. “To stop that piece of garbage who tried to—”

“I’m fine,” I say quietly. “And I’m not your responsibility anymore.”

He grunts.

“You will always be my responsibility.”

I grin. Grigori exhales heavily.

“How is Moscow?”

“Cold.”

He chuckles. “At this time of year? Nyet, little Mara. It is spring in bloom now.”

I giggle.

“And Mr. Reznikov?”

He’s trying, but I can hear the edge of concern and wariness in his voice.

“He’s good too, thank you. We’re very safe and protected here.”

“I am not concerned about the we,” he growls.

I smile. “Well, I am good. And very, very well protected.”

“Good,” he grunts. “That is all I care about.”

I chew on my lip.

“Hey, can I ask you about something?”

“Da, anything.”

“It’s about my dad.”

He grunts. “I will help if I can.”

“Did you know much about his private life?”

“His private life? Hmm…” Grigori breathes deeply. “No, not very much. What are you looking for?”

I glance up at the staircase and the walkway that runs along the top half of the huge two-story living area. Down the hall, Konstantin is having a phone meeting in the office space.

“My mother told me the other day that Semyon had an affair with Kristina Reznikov.”

The line goes absolutely silent.

“Grigori?”

Still nothing. But I can hear the deep, rhythmic, furious sound of the huge bodyguard inhaling and exhaling.

“Grigori, are you—”

“Affair?” He snarls suddenly, making me jump.

“Who calls this thing affair?”

I swallow. “My mother.”

He snorts, scoffing angrily, hissing before a few vicious sounding words in Russian tumble out.

“I’m sorry, I just wanted to ask, because I have no idea if she’s making stuff up—”

“I worked for your family a long time, Mara,” he hisses thinly. “I was loyal to your father, because he was my boss. But as a man, he…”

“My father was a vile piece of garbage, Grigori,” I say thinly. “You don’t have to sugarcoat this for me.”

He sneers a word in Russian.

“Your father was a monster, Mara,” he snarls suddenly, sounding angrier than I’ve ever heard him.

“I know—”

“You do not know the half of it,” he hisses.

“So tell me.”

I swallow, steeling myself.

“Tell me.”

“Affair?” He sneers. “Nyet, that was no affair. It was assault. He sexually assaulted her.”

My stomach churns. My blood runs cold.

“And he is the reason she died.”

Reality glitches. I freeze, chilling as I replay Lukas telling me about Konstantin finding his mother—witnessing the way she was brutally…

Oh my fucking God.

Jesus Christ. What if my father was there that night? What if Semyon was part of that horrific assault and killing of Konstantin’s own mother, which he witnessed?

My face turns white.

What if Konstantin knows my father was there.

“I… I have to go.”

I choke as I hang up on Grigori, feeling numb. In a daze, I stand, and before I know what I’m doing, I’m moving to the staircase and climbing it.
